What potential is there for the use of energy from wastewater in Upper Austria?
This was collected by the state's water management department on behalf of the responsible state councillor Stefan Kaineder and presented at a press conference yesterday.
We were delighted that our CEO Ulrike Rabmer-Koller was invited to this event to talk about our experience with energy from wastewater for renewable heating and cooling of buildings and to present the technology and previous projects.
The result of the surveys is a cadastre with a total of 30 utilization areas throughout
Upper Austria, but primarily in the central region, with a conservative estimate of the theoretical thermal
thermal potential of the wastewater for heating and hot water purposes on the one hand in the
sewer system upstream of the respective wastewater treatment plant and downstream of the wastewater treatment plant at the respective
wastewater treatment plant outlet.
According to initial estimates, the use of municipal wastewater as an energy source could supply eight percent of Upper Austrian households with heat!
As the Rabmer Group, we have been dealing with energy generation from wastewater for more than 10 years and we are very pleased that this topic is now also becoming more of a focus in Upper Austria. We very much welcome the survey of the theoretical potential of municipal wastewater, including the creation of a potential register, as well as the announced talks with wastewater operators.
However, based on our experience over the last 10 years, we can definitely say that the total practical project potential of energy from wastewater is likely to be even higher. This is because there is also the usable potential for cooling and the great energy treasure in industrial wastewater. There are many companies that often generate warm wastewater in the production process, which sometimes even has to be cooled with additional energy before it can be discharged into the sewer.
Many thanks to Provincial Councillor Stefan Kaineder and the responsible experts Andrea Gennari and Bernhard Brunn for collecting and presenting the data.
On the way to a climate-friendly future, the entire spectrum of possibilities and technologies must be
of possibilities and technologies - including, above all, resource-saving energy generation from wastewater.
